I write about my experiences and what I have learned throughout my horse riding journey.

Tips to Keep Your Horse Happy & Healthy - Savvy Horsewoman

Today’s post is all about my top tips to making sure that your horse is happy and healthy!

It is so important to have a happy and healthy horse because it does not only make your horse feel amazing, but it also helps in having great rides as well.

As I always like to say, a happy horse equals a happy life (SO true). Enjoy.

#1 – Develop a trustworthy bond with your horse.

Making sure that your horse trusts you is important before you start to ride and try different exercises. A trustworthy bond is the foundation to any horse and rider relationship.

It also helps your rides and exercises to run much more smoothly.

#2 – Switch up your horse’s exercise routine.

Changing up your horse’s routine might mean taking time to do groundwork exercises or going on a relaxing trail ride.

Whenever I go on a trail ride with my horse Sky, she always comes back so much happier and calm!

#3 – Set a schedule for your horse.

Setting a schedule is super important to making sure your horse stays healthy. Prepare ahead and plan the times of when the vet and farrier are scheduled to come or when your horse needs to be dewormed.

#4 – Book check-ups for your horse regularly.

This goes along with setting a schedule for your horse, but it also important.

Making sure you are booking regular vet check-ups, farrier, chiropractor, etc, helps your horse to stay healthy and happy.

#5 – Purchase the right products.

Knowing your horse helps you to be able to purchase the right products such as grooming brushes, feed, or tack.

Know the products that your horse prefers and doesn’t prefer.

I hope you found this post helpful and that it will help your horse as well!

Thanks so much for reading and thank you so much Savvy Horsewoman for having me on your amazing blog. As I always say on Horse Chats, until next time… don’t forget to hug your horse!

What are your tips to making sure your horse stays happy and healthy?

Keeley

These are such great reminders to tune in to your horse’s feedback. I especially love that getting the right gear is included as it makes such a difference in how the horse feels about the work they are doing. Thanks for sharing Keeley and Savvy Horsewoman

Keeley, I enjoyed your article. I always remember respect. That’s what my Granddad taught me. Happy horses are horses that are respected by their owners. They are all different personalities and some days are not good days for them. Don’t take your frustration out on them. If you’re having a bad day or they are maybe, take a break. Hoses like all animals, communicate in their own way. If they are sore, or cranky, give them some space. Pick up on those subtle cues and respect them. That way, the bond develops. Horses are not generally out to get you or hurt you. They want to feel loved and have a purpose in life just like you and me. And when they are fussy, their’s probably something physically going on so have them checked out by a vet.
