Whether I’m riding greenies or schoolmasters, “safety first” is always my motto.
I feel practically naked without my helmet on, and since becoming a (slightly over-cautious) mom I now often use one when lunging or doing ground work. After all, we’ve only got one head!
Since I spend so much time wearing a helmet it’s important to find one that’s not only reasonably priced, but also lightweight, comfortable, and ideally, doesn’t make me look like a bobble head.
I’ve been in the market for a new helmet so I though I’d share these gems that I’ve found. They’re almost always under $100 and usually have a customer rating of at least 4.5 out of 5 stars on Amazon.
💲 This helmet is the popular with my readers (and my own personal favorite!)
Here are 5 best-selling helmets:
Ovation Deluxe Schooler Helmet
This lightweight, low profile helmet comes in a variety of colors (including brown for the Western riders).
Customer Review: “I love this helmet!! My old one made me look like a mushroom head as do most of the ones out there. I read a lot of rave reviews on this one and decided to give it a try. No mushroom head and it’s really cool on hot rides. Even has enough room to wear a headband underneath comfortably.”
Troxel Liberty Schooling Helmet
I love the high gloss finish of this helmet, and the mesh vents to provide great air circulation.
Customer Review: “I originally ordered a Troxel Spirit, but didn’t like the bulkiness and that it didn’t fit my big head right. I returned it and got a Liberty instead. What a difference! It’s much more streamlined, and it’s light and fits perfect. I got the fuschia one and have gotten many compliments on it. I definitely recommend it.”
Tipperary Sportage Equestrian Helmet
This helmet features a sleek design, flexible visor and a rear reflective strip.
Customer Review: “I bought the Tipperary based on recommendations at the Chronicle of the Horse forums, and I’m glad I did. It’s much more comfortable and it feels like it properly cradles and protects my skull instead of creating pressure points. I like that it covers the occipital bone, and so far it feels like it has good airflow and stays cool (we’ve only gotten up to the low 90s here in upstate NY though; we’ll see what I think after moving to TX this summer lol).”
Troxel Rebel Performance Helmet
If you’re looking for a schooling helmet that stands out from the rest, this is it!
Customer Review: “Troxel’s new line of Western style helmets are awesome. Instead of the dial-a-size knob on older helmets, it has an adjustable elastic strap for the back piece. Fits very securely, light weight, breathes very well, and has no issues with vision or hearing. I normally hate helmets, but this one I can wear and forget it’s a helmet. I start thinking I’ve just got a ball cap on it’s so comfortable and light. If you haven’t liked Troxel’s helmets in the past, I recommend trying this one out.”
Ovation Metallic Schooler Helmet
A fun and flashy helmet with a durable rubberized finish, and lots of color options.
Customer Review: “Very comfortable, light, cool in hot weather”
